Today, we’re making a delicious seasonal compote with persimmon and apple.
This compote is smooth, creamy, and naturally sweet, perfect for babies from 6 months old.
Persimmon is a seasonal fruit that pairs wonderfully with apple. Alix and Sasha love when persimmon season begins! I often serve it to them in small pieces for breakfast, but this time I wanted to try something different with a lovely persimmon-apple combo.
Persimmons can be astringent if not ripe enough (that dry mouth feeling is very unpleasant). For this recipe, choose a ripe persimmon (variety: persimmon/fuyu), soft but not overly mushy. Cooking the fruit also helps remove any astringency.
Note: If your persimmon is very ripe and not astringent, you can skip cooking it and only cook the apple. The persimmon will add a naturally gelled texture and a concentrated sweet flavor to the compote.
Ingredients
For 1 to 2 servings (about 180 g):
- 1 ripe persimmon (persimmon/fuyu variety – approx. 175 g of flesh)
- 1 small apple (such as Golden – approx. 150 g peeled)
Preparation of the persimmon and apple compote
- Wash, peel, and dice the apple into small pieces.
- Peel the persimmon and roughly chop it. Make sure it’s not too astringent before starting the cooking process (if it isn’t astringent, you can even skip cooking it and simply blend it with the apple at the end!).
Cooking and blending
- Steam the apple and persimmon pieces for about 8 minutes, until soft. (If you prefer, you can also cook them in a saucepan with a little water over low heat, but steaming preserves nutrients best.)
- Once the fruits are cooked, place them in a blender.
- Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy. If needed, add a bit of water to adjust the texture to your baby’s preference.
And that’s it! Your persimmon and apple compote is ready. This compote is soft, naturally sweet, and baby is going to love it. Enjoy!
Storage
- In the refrigerator: Store the compote in an airtight container for up to 48 hours.
- In the freezer: Freeze the compote in small portions for up to 1 month. Thaw at room temperature or in a water bath before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use another fruit with persimmon?
Yes, persimmon pairs very well with pear or banana if you’re looking for another soft and sweet compote.
