Recipe Steps
Apples are one of the first fruits we introduce to our babies. What’s great is that they are super easy to cook with!
Apples are sweet and packed with vitamins. They are high in fiber, which helps regulate digestion, making them an excellent choice for starting your baby’s food diversification journey. Ideally, for making compotes, you should choose a variety of apple that holds up well, like Golden Delicious. You can easily spot them at the market with their yellowish skin.
Your baby has probably already tried some vegetables if you’ve started the food diversification process following this program. Now it’s time to introduce fruits for snacks. Exciting!
Here’s what you’ll need to cook this baby apple compote (From 4 months, yields approximately 6.5 ounces (185g) of apple compote):
Ingredients
- 7.8 ounces Golden Delicious apples (1 large apple, 220g)
- Water for steaming
Preparation
Start by washing your Golden Delicious apple. Peel it, then cut it into pieces. After peeling, you should have around 6.5 ounces of apple (185g).
I always cut my fruits into small pieces or slices to ensure even and quick cooking.
Cooking
Place your Golden Delicious apple pieces in a steamer basket, and you can start steaming. Steam for about 8 minutes. Let’s go!
Once the apple is cooked, put the pieces in your blender, and you can start blending at high speed. Feel free to do an initial blend and add cooking water later to achieve the desired consistency. (I always use a small blender to get perfectly smooth purees and compotes, it’s ideal for starting the food diversification process!).
Your baby’s apple compote is ready. Let it cool for a bit at room temperature, then refrigerate it for up to 48 hours or freeze it for up to 2 months (to learn more about baby food storage, click here).
Enjoy, baby!
Storage
Once the apple compote is prepared, let it cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
- Storage: Transfer the compote to an airtight container or a clean glass jar with a tightly closed lid.
- Refrigerator: Keep the apple compote in the refrigerator for a maximum of 2 to 3 days. Always ensure it is maintained at an appropriate refrigeration temperature.
- Freezer: If you wish to store it for a longer period, you can freeze it. Place the compote in an airtight freezer bag or a container suitable for freezing, and label it with the date. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Tip: When thawing, place the apple compote in the refrigerator overnight or gently reheat it in a double boiler for a perfect consistency.
Don’t forget to check the smell and appearance of the compote before giving it to your baby after storage. If it seems to have gone bad or developed a strange odor, it’s best not to feed it to your baby and discard it. Always prioritize freshness and food safety for the little ones!
