What quantity of milk does a baby need per day? How many ounces in a baby’s bottle? This is one of the first questions that arises when a baby is born, whether they are breastfed or bottle-fed!
How many bottles? How many feedings? On demand? How much milk?
First and foremost, please note that these indications should be approached with caution, as these quantities are averages. I strongly advise all mothers to consult their pediatrician first. The pediatrician is the best person to guide them, adapting to the specific needs and development of their own baby, as baby’s requirements increase with age and weight.
What quantity of milk does a baby need in a bottle? How many ounces in a baby’s bottle?
The amount of milk a baby needs per day increases as they grow. Here are the daily milk quantities for different age ranges:
From birth to one month: Baby drinks approximately 22 fluid ounces (650ml) of milk per day, divided into around 6 bottles (if 6 bottles, around 3.7 fluid ounces/110ml per bottle).
From 1 to 3 months: Baby drinks around 25 fluid ounces (750ml) of milk per day, divided into 5 or 6 bottles (if 5 bottles: 5 fluid ounces/150ml per bottle; if 6 bottles: 4.2 fluid ounces/125ml per bottle).
From 3 months until starting solid foods: Baby now drinks approximately 30 fluid ounces (900ml) of milk per day, divided into 4 or 5 bottles (if 4 bottles: 7.5 fluid ounces/225ml per bottle; if 5 bottles: 6 fluid ounces/180ml per bottle).
And after starting solid foods, how much milk should be given?
Once you have introduced solid foods, your baby’s milk needs will decrease. However, they still need milk as it remains the main part of their diet. So, how much milk does a baby need?
From the start of solid food introduction until 12 months: Baby gradually transitions to needing around 20 fluid ounces (600ml) of milk per day in addition to solid food.
From 1 to 3 years: Baby will drink approximately 17 fluid ounces (500ml) of toddler milk per day in addition to solid food.
What quantity of milk does a breastfed baby need?
The needs are the same for breastfed babies, but for mothers who breastfeed, it is often difficult and stressful during their first experience to know if the baby is feeding properly and getting the right amount of milk per day.
From birth until starting solid foods: Baby will need approximately 5 to 12 feedings per day, on demand!
And after starting solid foods, how much milk should be given to the baby?
Breastfeeding should still be offered to the baby even after starting solid foods. As I mentioned earlier, milk remains the primary source of nutrition for the baby!
Offer the breast after each meal and on-demand throughout the day. You will notice that milk needs and the number of feedings will decrease, but it’s important not to eliminate them.
If you are unsure about the milk quantities your breastfed baby is consuming, or if you are returning to work or your baby is going to daycare, you can choose to express milk using a manual or electric breast pump.
Keep in mind that if you decide to stop breastfeeding, this should be a personal choice. You are the best judge of what is good for your baby, and regardless of your decision, you will remain the best mother for your baby <3
A small tip to determine the quantity of milk a baby needs per day based on their weight:
Once again, I strongly encourage parents to consult their pediatrician if they have any doubts. The pediatrician is the best person to provide information regarding your baby’s health and nutrition!
Take the baby’s weight in grams, divide by 10, then add 200 to the result.
Example for a 6kg (6000g) baby:
–> 6000g /10 = 600
–> 600+200 = 800ml
Therefore, a 6kg baby requires approximately 27 fluid ounces (800ml) of milk per day.
Lastly, it’s important to mention that you should monitor your baby’s development and regularly visit the pediatrician, especially during the first year for follow-up appointments and vaccinations. If you have any concerns about your baby’s weight or anything else, do not hesitate to seek medical advice!
Your baby’s health is a top priority! 😉
