Today, I wanted to share an easy and quick waffle recipe for babies (and the whole family). I realized that I had never posted this recipe on the website, even though we make waffles at home very often! (Well, I did post an original avocado banana waffle recipe here 🙂)
Light plain and chocolate waffle recipe for babies (From 10 months old)
For this recipe, I wanted to offer a variation: plain and cocoa. The flavors are distinct, and the colors are different, allowing babies to explore different tastes!
To be honest, I cheated a little in the “plain” part by adding a bit of vanilla sugar. This is really a matter of personal preference, and don’t hesitate to improvise and adapt with what you have in the fridge and pantry while cooking!
Typically, I don’t have granulated sugar in my pantry… I don’t know how often I buy it, but it’s really VERY rare, and we’ve been running low for about 2 months now, without it bothering us… we mostly use honey (From 12 months) as a substitute or simply omit it altogether!
I don’t only use milk in this recipe; I compensate with water, which lightens the batter (similar to what I did here with dairy-free crepes).
Enough talking, let’s get started.
Here’s what you need to cook this light plain and chocolate waffle recipe for babies (From 10 months old, makes 4 waffles):
- [adinserter block="11"]
- - 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
- - 1/2 cup (130ml) milk
- - 1/4 cup (70ml) water
- - 1 egg
- - 1 tablespoon (8g) melted butter (or 1 tablespoon/15ml neutral oil)
- - 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
- - 2 level teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder (Van Houten)
Start by placing the flour in a mixing bowl.
In a separate bowl, pour 1/2 cup (130ml) of milk (whole milk is richer, but reduced-fat works perfectly fine).
Add 1/4 cup (70ml) of water to it.
Finally, crack an egg into the milk-water mixture and whisk vigorously to obtain a homogeneous mixture.
Melt 1 tablespoon (8g) of butter in a small dish, let it cool slightly (so it doesn’t cook the egg), and add it to the milk-water-egg mixture.
Mix vigorously again.
Pour this mixture over the flour while stirring with a whisk. You should obtain a smooth batter without lumps.
If you don’t want to make waffles with different flavors, you can simply stop here, let the batter rest, or add the flavor of your choice: a bit of vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon, orange blossom… if not, now is the time to divide the batter in half.
You should have divided your batter into 2 portions in bowls, about 6.25 ounces (185ml) each 😉
In one of the portions, you can mix 2 teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa powder (Van Houten) (you can add a bit of sugar with the cocoa to reduce its bitterness).
In the other portion, I added a bit of vanilla sugar.
Now, let the batter rest for at least 30 minutes before cooking 😉
After letting our waffle batter rest, it’s time to cook them! Many people ask me about it, so here’s the waffle maker I use, which I got on sale, here. It’s great, it indicates when it’s hot, easy to store, and has various plates for paninis, croque-monsieurs, etc… sold separately.
Anyway! We cook them for about 3 to 4 minutes (checking regularly) until the waffles are slightly crispy on the outside (a sign that they’re crispy) but not too much! They should remain soft on the inside 😉
It’s ready!
Our light plain and chocolate waffle recipe for babies (From 10 months old) is now complete, and the baby and the whole family can enjoy them!
Bon appétit 😉
